Eclipse 'chaos'

Police publish list of incidents

Thousands of people across Langport and Huish attempted to peer through the cloud to see the partial eclipse of the sun this morning. But as they did so, others allegedly took advantage of the darkness to carry out what police describe as "a string of clandestine activities".
Among them, several cucumbers were seen being smuggled in to the men's gift shop at the old registry office in Bow Street. Digging and the noise of cable-cutters were heard at the back of The Kelways Inn. Down at Eli's landlord Steve Pittard allegedly had his hand inside the back of the fruit machine and was pressing the "fix wins" button.

In another incident - the fish monger's kiosk at the back of Langport carpark had to close completely when in the confused darkness a waitress from Rumours Tapas Bar was sold a large haddock instead of the usual medium cod.
But some local businesses took no notice of the eclipse at all. No attempt was made to undraw the curtains at Kelways.

- and the tenants at this property on North Street had no say in the matter - their windows have been boarded up since 1853.

There are no further details.
