MANHUNT

 Langport Prison Escape

This was the moment an inmate at Langport Prison jumped to freedom this lunchtime, sparking a police manhunt across the area.

The man, photographed dangling from the first floor sluice room by a woman waiting to be served at The Wharf, was later seen dashing through the centre of Langport.

"He got one of my bloody Christmas trees!" said Evans The Butcher, as he put 'for sale' signs on 3 lawnmowers and a breadmaker outside his shop.

These two Garden City men, serving time for building conservatories without planning permission, were accused by the prison governor of helping the man escape but have angrily denied the accusations.

One eyewitness said she thought she later saw the man, still wearing his silly costume, jumping up and down waving his arms around frantically in front of traffic.

"No no no" said the Town Clerk, "that was local volunteers doing the HGV count on Post Office Corner"

Local police - pictured above leaving the Freemasons' Lodge at the Hanging Chapel last night - say anyone who sees the escapee should ring their local emergency response team in Wincanton and leave a message.

AND WE'VE JUST HEARD - the escaped convict was cornered, stuck in the porch area of the Doctor's Surgery about an hour ago.

"Thank God he couldn't work out where the button was to open the automatic door into the main waiting room" said Doctor Balai.

The fire brigade says 28 other people were found trapped there with him.

There are no further details.
