Carry On Langport's Archives

Recognise anyone?

Most of them probably lived around Huish and Langport.

Many thanks to carryonlangport.blogspot.com reader Chris Hull who's forwarded us this classic photograph of times gone by.

By the looks of the sign in the centre, they were hired by the now long-defunct Langport Rural District Council to widen local roads.

Bear in mind, back in the day roads around Somerset and the rest of the country were often far more narrow and country lanes in particular needed their verges clearing regularly to stop them spreading inwards.

Unfortunately, the picture hasn't come with a date but the historians among you may be able to help. The clothes they were wearing and tools they were using are certainly a big clue.

1920s?

As for where it was taken, could be anywhere: Wagg Drove? Muchelney Straight? Upton?

If you think you know or even better, spot somebody you recognise, get in touch.
