Carry On Langport's Archives

Cheapside - Langport - late 1950s:

Another photographic gem!

Another photographic gem's been handed in to Carry On Langport in recent days which we are delighted to publish.

This was taken by Michael Bown from the window of the solicitors' office Louch, Willmott & Clarke where he worked between the end of the 50s and the early 60s.

Many thanks Mr Bown...classy surname by the way.

In other news...

Back to the present day and at least two new businesses are popping up in town. Well, one's been there for years but just has new people in charge...a Langport mother and daughter team apparently:

Sounds good - just don't go all fancy and overpriced on us eh.

Meanwhile, Stuckey's Bank looks like it's ready to blossom into something completely different...

...with these posters appearing in the windows in recent weeks.

Sounds like they're all upstairs though with no firm news on what's happening on the ground floor yet so watch this space.

But while new businesses get ready for launching, one old-timer has allegedly folded...

Not a business exactly but a football team.

News is pretty patchy on this one [where's Levelling Langport Magazine when you need it?] but Langport FC - more recently known as Langport & Huish Sports - appears to be no more.

Until earlier this year it was still in the fixture listings on the FA website for the Yeovil & District League but not anymore.

At least 3 sources have told Carry On Langport the side just couldn't get enough players.

If so, where were the posters and online appeals for more young men to sign up? Or is running around on a football pitch keeping fit for 90 minutes old hat nowadays?

Whatever the reason, sad for the town. Not the end of FA footy in Langport and Huish though - there are already murmurs of an all-new 'Langport Albion' side in the making.

Sounds good - get in touch if you need members and your local blog will put it out there.
