Sparkies at SWEB's yard!

Until the Thatcher government privatised everything, here in Langport and the entire South West of England we all paid the South Western Electricity Board - or SWEB - to keep our lights on.

The state-owned firm also sent out teams of electricians - or sparkies - to work on homes, businesses and street lights.

Here are many of them [plus wives, office staff and managers] at the SWEB yard that used to be on North Street in Langport. The driveway in to it is still there today and the electricity transformer still stands and operates behind [you can see it better from Tesco car park]

Taken in the mid-1960s, we've compiled a list of who some of them are.

This isn't a deadly accurate person-to-person left to right description, just a list of names of people in the photograph. It's almost in the correct order but there are gaps. Faces we couldn't name.

 Here ya go...

Gerald House, Den Harwood, Eddie Overd, Alf Taylor

Ozzie Tovey, Tommy Sandford, Josie Watts, Len Harvey

Den Sheppard, Brian Foster, Bob Manning, Clive Davies, Harold Bennett

Frank Bennett, Allan Bennett, Jack Brown, Laurie Webber

Charlie Bunston, Bill Hill & Den Bown.

Anyone you remember?

Many thanks to Maureen Crossman for supplying the photograph and names.

In other news...

SAVE THE DATE!

Another Cocklemoor carboot sale is planned for Sunday 5th September from midday.

Including, as before, the burger van and ice cream van. Also hopefully some more buskers and a bar if it can be sorted.

Stick it on your kitchen wall calendar and if you fancy doing a stall, e-mail bountybar@hotmail.com for details.

Finally....

Does that mean we can suspend our council tax payments for 6 weeks next time we hit hard times?

Think hell would freeze over first, don't you?!
