Panic in Bow Street

...as town clock goes 'critical'...

Langport Town Clock has gone critical this weekend as the ancient device appears to display the time in Bombay, New York and East Croydon. Drivers approaching from the Curry Rivel direction yesterday thought it was 20 past 3 while anyone coming down from the post office could clearly see 5 to 9. The clock has barely any numbers left on one side and a mysterious 'third hand' on the other sparking confusion among staff at Scrivens who put out and put away their sausage display 3 times in 20 minutes.

The situation then deteriorated further when the big hand on one of the clock's faces hit a lump of moss as it approached half past 4 sending vibrations down into the ground which surfaced minutes later in Huish Episcopi causing the wooden gazebo structure outside Eli's to level itself for the first time since it was built.

The clock's been confusing locals for some weeks...earlier this month there was traffic chaos when several mothers on the school run glanced up at it and performed emergency u-turns outside the Langport Arms. It happened just as a 30 kilo black forest gateau was being delivered, causing several passers-by to suffer whipped cream injuries.

But yesterday's incidents in Bow Street have caught the attention of the national media and the editor of 'What a big clock you've got!' magazine told Carry On Langport that the time piece had become so famous around the country it may even get centre spread in next month's edition.
"Pity it hasn't got a pendulum" she said.

This Langport shopper, photographed trying to tell the time in Bow Street this morning, said he supported the town council's plan to replace the ageing structure with a sundial.
