Yawn - local elections

Come on - that's not the attitude - get out and vote!

No preaching today about who you should vote for. Just hoping some readers will head out and exercise their democratic right to kick people out this Thursday 4th May - if that's how they're feeling.

If you don't think county elections matter, take a look at who gets what money on your council tax bill run-down.

It may be the district council at Yeovil that sends out the demands, but it's actually the county at Taunton that gets the lion's share of what we hand over - and so county councillors who decide how to spend our money.

Just take a quick look at who won control (the Tories) of Somerset County Council at Taunton in the county elections last time round and maybe think about who you want to vote for today:

Conservatives 31 councillors
Lib-Dems 14 councillors
Labour & Independent Group 5 councillors
Independent 1 councillor
UKIP 3 councillors

This result gave the Conservatives overall control of Somerset County Council.

The Langport seat was won by Tory Derek Yeomans last time. Here he is campaigning (above) in Bow Street in the last elections for more money to be spent on Langport clock.

But Mr Yeomans has been ousted by newcomer Clare Aparicio (below), who's taken over leadership of the Langport seat.

Here she is measuring out milk quotas in the kitchen at the Parrett Cafe last week.

"You churn if you want to" she was heard saying.

So who else is standing? In second place for power at county hall in the last vote were the Lib-Dems who have a long track record of running Somerset over the yeas when the Tories aren't. It's often a close (and not so close) battle between the two.

So here are your county candidates for the Langport seat in today's countywide elections:

Clare Aparicio - Conservative
Julia Gadd - Lib-Dem
Barbara Jell - UKIP
Andrew Lee - Independent
Stephen Tate - Green Party
Stephen Tilley - Labour

Polling Stations? In the usual places from early doors til 10pm.

Happy voting.
