Langport's last bank closes its doors
NatWest on Cheapside, Langport, will be no more at the end of business today (Thurs).
There's been a bank there since around 1854, when the building went up and was occupied by Stuckey's banking company.
Stuckey's bank had already been around for decades - with a bank note circulation across Britain second only to that of the Bank of England.
Pictured: Vincent Stuckey whose Langport bank was known across Britain in the 1800 and early 1900s.
He's been heard spinning in his grave this week.
NatWest's justification for turning its back on its Langport customers is that customer numbers have fallen in recent years by around 21%.
Bizarrely, on planet NatWest, you only counted as a customer in the official daily statistics for the Langport branch if you went in and made a cash deposit.
So what will become of the building? A number of readers have already been sending in suggestions:
😊
😊
A pizza restaurant
A mobile phone shop
The North Korean Embassy

Marvellous stuff - keep it coming!
So let's see what we get. In the meantime, rest in peace Langport banking - and thanks for nothing NatWest.
