The Countdown's Begun...

A decision will be made next week on whether Persimmon Homes can have planning permission for almost 100 new dwellings on the land opposite the Kelways Inn.

(That's despite the fact that the builder has had its 'Coming Soon' sign up on the land for months already)

If the application on what's known as 'The Trial Ground' does get the green light, South Somerset District Councillors at Yeovil next Wednesday could still impose conditions...

They could order Persimmon not to rip out the towering avenue of beech trees which runs down through the middle of the plot from one end to the other.

It's a major landmark in the area and must have had some historical connection with the Kelways building whose main front entrance appears to line up perfectly with the avenue.

It's also a haven for local wildlife...from birds to insects and even bats.

But Persimmon's not having any of it...it claims that the removal of the hedge, shown above from the air in the middle of the picture, will enhance the homes it intends to build on the site.

The move has prompted objections and a petition from campaigners who say the landmark should remain where it is and become part of the new estate.

- and they say it's not too late to get involved and lodge your objection.

The district councillor for the area is Clare Aparicio Paul

Campaigners [against the whole development or simply just against the removal of the hedge] are urging Carry On Langport's readers to get their views in before the weekend - to ensure they'll be presented to district councillors before they make their decision in the middle of next week.

- Wednesday's meeting in Yeovil is open to the public and you can even speak if you wish to before any vote takes place.

It starts at 2.35pm at the SSDC headquarters at Brympton Way.

That's it for the moment - we'll bring you more news on this story as it comes in.
