This Thursday...

Huish gets a choice - but no public vote in Langport

(Reading on Facebook? To view the lists of locals standing for council seats, you'll have to go to the main blog page carryonlangport.blogspot.com )

There are district, town and parish council elections across the UK a week tomorrow including for South Somerset, Huish Episcopi and Langport.

Let's put the district vote to one side and look at what's happening on our doorsteps.

Langport voters don't get a choice for who's on the town council next Thursday because not enough people stood to trigger a vote. Those 'newbies' who did stand - Janie Dromgoole, Benoit Buchy-Dury and Nicola French - will automatically be 'co-opted' on to the council meaning they'll join councillors who already had a seat last time around.

A few items of interest: Mrs Dromgoole's husband Sean is also an aspiring local politician. He's hoping to win a seat on Huish Parish Council while Mr Buchy-Dury will be Langport's youngest councillor by far - and possibly in its history - at just 18 years-old!

So let's take a look at who will be sitting on Langport Town Council after May 2nd.

This lack of candidates plus a shortfall of councillors anyway at Langport, means that just 8 people will be making decisions for the town.

So no voting in Langport next week then. In Huish Episcopi, however, democracy appears to be alive and well. So many people are standing for seats that a parish election's been triggered.

Many of you will also be asked to select a South Somerset District Councillor when you enter the polling booth next week.

It was of course many - but not all - of them who spent so much time dithering over the Persimmon Homes application opposite Kelways that we've ended up with houses on a greenfield site that will in no way fit in with the surrounding buildings and further clog up our already busy local roads.

Thanks for that.

One more thing - remember that both Huish Episcopi Parish and Langport Town Council meetings (and indeed the district councils') are all open to the public, where you can raise your hand and question those making the decisions.

Worth a thought eh - especially if just EIGHT individuals will be making decisions on how Langport and the beautiful Cocklemoor might look in the future.

We have to keep them on their toes folks.
