In 1943 two RAF planes collided over Langport. Details are patchy but at least one of them came down in floodwater near Coombe.
Many locals, including Den Bown from Garden City and Dick Vearnecombe from The Avenue, went down and saw the aftermath.
There were fatalities but we're not sure how many. It's believed some of the crew[s] may be buried at Bridgwater.
The above [pictured] is a brief snippit of something found online. Some accounts of the accident say the pilots of the stricken aircraft did all they could to avoid local homes as they came down.
Fascinating and poignant.
We salute them in 2021.
