Twee and Quaint?

Or should our landmarks and street furniture simply be left to rot?

 [scroll down for riverbank story]

Pictured above, a cycle race passing under the old iron girder railway bridge at Langport. Early 60s?

Alas today's bridge there isn't so sweet on the eye. Welcoming drivers in to the town, it's now a huge grey-sided structure badly in need of a paint. The old phone box, there for decades and left to rot by our town council, has recently been dragged away with no thought of maintaining it, doing it up or replacing it 'as a piece of local history' like other nearby communities have. Look at Ash or High Ham.

Boo!

THE RIVERBANK

Carry On Langport hears that district council contractors cutting the grass on Cocklemoor last week told passers-by that "no we won't be strimming back the weeds that are already starting to grow along the river bank, the town council asked us not to. Concerns about nesting birds apparently"

Here we go again then folks! Let's remind ourselves of what's coming:

Forget safety on the water for swimmers, paddleboarders and boaters - here's the 6-foot high beauty you can expect along the full stretch of Cocklemoor this summer. That's despite at least two known-of incidents on the water in summers gone by, as commented on at the time by Carry On Langport.

From June 2021:

E-mails from members of the public who'd seen said incidents were sent to the town council last summer along the lines of the above. Not even answered.

So there ya go folks. Forget your drowning teenager who can't even be seen waving for help [I mean we're only talking about keeping a 300-400 metre stretch clear!] as long as Sally Sparrow's got somewhere to nest!

More details just in:

Breaking News from Sally Sparrow....

"I wouldn't build a home along that bit anyway, too many dogs passing by" she told us from her current nest on the big hand of Langport town clock, "and anyway none of us nest in stingers, rapeseed and thistle. Totally impractical and just plain daft. We'd rather live up the Persimmon estate!"

There ya go, from the horse's mouth sparrow's beak.

You heard it here first!

What a carry on!
