Recent correspondence from Carry On Langport readers over the last few days, all of which are understandably about the closure of a local gem...

Dear Sir,
We were very sad to hear that AJ Shepherd, Langport's oldest bakery, is closing in the precinct after so many decades. Does anyone know if another bakery might buy the business? Burns The Bread maybe? I mean my wife and I have no problem with the other bakeries in the town, we just don't like sourdough bread.
Many thanks.
George and Mildred Roper.

To The Editor,
My friends and I have already started a sweepstake on whether the business which moves in to the precinct when the bakery closes will be another cafe. Also, being working class lads who just want something cheap and cheerful to eat in the van on the way to the site...we have been wondering where we should go now? Unfortunately, none of us like sourdough bread.
Regards.
Rodney and Trigger.

Dear Madam,
How sad that our only true 'working class' bakery, here for over 90 years I read, is closing. We often enjoyed the old-fashioned cream cakes and slices at an affordable price and bread that wasn't sour. Anywhere we can go in Somerton?
All the best.
Terry and June Scott.

To Carry On Langport,
Where do I go now for my cheap hot breakfast turnover and eclair? Shepherds has been so handy over the years just parking my truck over by the wall and strolling in when Pendra's is closed. I guess I'll just have to start going to some of our 'newer' bakeries......but what the f**k is sourdough bread?
Many thanks.
Selwyn Froggit.

Dear Sir,
Thank you for your recent correspondence but at present we do not know if any of our members plan to open a business in the soon-to-be vacated premises of Shepherd's bakery or indeed anywhere in Langport, despite several dozen requests from 'desperate' locals. As soon as we hear anything, we will let you know.
Regards.
The Greasy Spoon Cafes Association, South West Branch.

Dear Blogger,
Just heard the news about Shepherds! No! Any word on who's going to move in and if it's going to be another plain cheap and cheerful old-fashioned bakery? We've got everything crossed that it will be. Here's hoping!
Many thanks and keep us posted!

PS - me and the wife don't eat sourdough bread.

Great selection of letters and e-mails there, many thanks for your contributions.
So farewell to all the team at Shepherd's which closes tomorrow Saturday 21st January after what we believe is NINETY TWO YEARS in the town. Wow!
Thanks for being there through the 1930s, the second world war, the rock and roll 50s, the swinging 60s, the disco 70s, Thatcher's 80s, the Brit Pop 90s and everything since.
THANK YOU
