Turkeys on the 'Oh yes please, do let's have a railway station' campaign are still voting for Christmas this summer folks as they continue to push for one for the Langport/Somerton area.
This time it's the Somerset Conservatives wanting us to get involved. This, from Facebook at the moment:
No thanks.
Carry On Langport's never shied away from saying that the idea is bloody awful.
Railway stations like Langport East and West, closed in the 60s, were twee affairs.
You think traffic's got bad around here in recent years?
Stations in modern Britain come with car parks, new traffic junctions, traffic lights, increased traffic and the usual selection of fastfood outlets and kiosks.
And there's more.
Adding either 'Langport' or 'Somerton' to the national rail timetable also puts the entire area in the commuter belts of several southern English towns and cities, pushing up rents and house prices and making it even more unaffordable for locals to live where their parents and grandparents did.
Look at where we already have train stations:
Is it really such a bad thing to have to drive [or be driven] for 30 minutes to catch a train?
Langport and Huish and Somerton and their surrounding towns and villages are special, off the beaten track, quirky and unspoilt.
Stick us on the national rail timetable and you can say cheerio to all that.
You have been warned.
For those who disagree, fair enough.
For those who agree, good luck with expressing your views. The most recent batch of surveys and opinion polls on the subject are blatantly geared towards having a station.
The 'no' choices are limited and often immediately followed by irrelevant questions like 'how often would you use the station?' even though you've just clicked on 'no'!
Tiz a funny old world.
