CAR FIRE:

Panic stations at Eastover!

Nobody appears to have been hurt in a vehicle blaze up at Eastover earlier this week.

A car was reportedly gutted and some nearby fences were also damaged.

It happened on Monday.

One eyewitness says when she first saw smoke bellowing over the housing estate that she didn't dial 999 thinking it was just another chip pan fire at Portcullis House.

"But then I realised it couldn't have been" she said, "Maureen Crossman, Janet Male, Ruby Morris, Eileen Westlake and Brenda Eagle don't work there anymore, so I picked up the phone"

Meanwhile, English Heritage says it's "massively relieved" that the flames from the electric car didn't damage any nearby listed buildings.

"Fortunately no splendid examples of local architecture were affected" said a spokeswoman, "and so the sports club and scout hut remain intact."
