Queen of Garden City takes her final bow:
Many Carry On Langport readers of a certain 'vintage' will have been coaxed in and out of the dinner hall and around the primary school on North Street back in the 70s by Joan Wybrow.
Joan passed away a week ago today at the grand old age of 95.
My own memories of her are fond ones: big curly hair, big brown suede/sheepskin coat and sheepskin boots, a whistle in her pocket to keep us in line and a soft gentle voice.
I, for one, considered her one of the more 'approachable' playground & dinner hall supervisors during my time there over 40 years ago....in other words she, unlike her colleagues Mrs Con and Mrs Vigar, didn't scare the you-know-what out of me!
At Garden City she was much treasured too, watching over all her neighbours throughout the decades and indeed watching my own grandparents bring up the next generation of my family too, just across the road.
And it wasn't only human neighbours Joan felt she had to keep an eye on, I doubt she nor any Garden City residents ever forgot the day many years ago when 'that thing' got out of its cage on the corner.
Joan's cremation will take place at Yeovil on Friday 10th of November at 10:40 followed by a service at St Mary's Church in Huish Episcopi at 2pm.
Her son Derek and daughter Sheelagh say all are welcome at either or both and indeed they'd like to see you at the wake and celebration of her life too at the Langport Arms that afternoon from 3.15pm.
[Please pass the details on]
So thank you for helping to steer us through our childhoods at the local primary Joan and for everything you have done since.
....and when you see your old neighbour Mrs Badge up there, tell her and Valerie to keep the bloody thing under control!
I mean how did it get in to heaven anyway?
