Langport Friendly Society walk underway.
Go out and support one of the only Friendly Societies left in the country today. It's 'club day' and local Friendly Society members and their guests are following Kingsbury Band through Huish and Langport - making stops at a handful of 'drinking parlours' including some private addresses. The tradition dates back to the 1800s and the society raises money for good causes. The day ends at The Langport Arms Motel later with a luncheon of almost 100 members and guests with merry-making and speeches from the top table. The only lady 'allowed' to attend the event will be Huish Episcopi Vicar the Reverend Jess Pitman who's reportedly promised not to be "too disgusted" by the blue jokes traditionally told by speakers on the top table.
(In the early 1980s the local vicar, Canon Molesworth, wrote a letter to the club president complaining about the content of some of the speeches at the luncheon - seriously - it happened!)
Several crash mats were delivered to the Langport Arms earlier today as many members and guests are expected to 'keel over' at some point during proceedings - either due to the amount of 'merry-making' they've done or because of the speeches from the top table.
