AIR DAY AT DRAYTON

Marquee hits power lines...

There was drama at Drayton International Air Day yesterday when a performing marquee hit electricity cables during a loop-the-loop stunt. It caused power cuts in parts of Drayton, Curry Rivel, Long Sutton, Langport and Huish Episcopi.

The only person injured was this woman (above) who didn't have time to dodge the marquee as it came down.

Nobody else was hurt but police say three hand-stitched pillow cases were slightly damaged when the power cables themselves came down on a stall in the main arena.

The power cuts in some towns and villages lasted about an hour.

"We gave our customers refreshments and newpapers until we got the doors open" said the manageress at One Stop in Langport.

The lights also went out at the town's branch of NatWest. "It was pretty much like most days of the week" said a spokeswoman.

In Long Sutton there were several complaints at The Devonshire Arms when the lack of lighting meant bar staff accidentally served 5 working-class customers.

But the couple who run Langport's Black Swan (below) said yesterday's blackout didn't bother them.

"It's the first time we've been to bed before 6 o'clock for 30 years" said the landlady.

Life in Drayton has now returned to normal (as normal as it can be) and an air accident investigation is underway.
