EARTHQUAKE

Editor's note: this story was published before recent events in New Zealand.

Reports are coming in of a major earthquake in part of Huish Episcopi this weekend.

Several people were injured when the tremor, measuring 6.9 on the Richter Scale, struck in the Garden City area. Our reporters haven't been able to get to the scene but nearby communities have also been affected.

This was the scene at the Kelways Inn when four people were "catapulted across the room" just as they asked South Somerset District Council if they could build another skittle alley at Pibsbury.

It's believed the tremors may have been triggered by what seismologists are describing as a 'rather good firework display' at the old White Lion last night.

For more details of that incident, log on to the Facebook Group 'whatelsecanwemoanabout.com'

(forget barrel bombs being dropped on schools and hospitals in Syria...this was a firework display over a private garden on a Saturday night in November...bloody disgusting)

Eastover was also devastated by last night's quake, this eyewitness photograph clearly shows the upper floor of one of the old council houses.

"No no no" said a nurse at nearby Portcullis House, "that place on the corner has always looked like that."

This morning (Sunday) several Langport and Huish residents...fearful of further aftershocks...were seen evacuating their homes

The Home Office says anyone trying to contact relatives who may have been caught up in the disaster should leave a calling card at the telephone box under the railway bridge.

"Waste of time" said an Avenue man, "I've been advertising there for 6 months and haven't heard from anyone"

There are no further details at present.
