Panic in the streets

...readers express their horror over local newspaper report...

Several readers of the award-winning Western Gazette say they are "in shock" this week after reading graphic details of an incident in Somerton last month.

'Drunken Pub Customer Smashed Gate' on page 3 has reportedly caused several people to have nightmares. The BBC says even its Crimewatch UK programme may travel down to the town next month to re-enact what happened...with several local rugby players already hired as extras to play 'passers-by'.

"It's horrific" said one reader, "I'm surprised the Gazette even had time to report on the crown court murder trial of the Ilton travellers site shooting...which I found tucked away ten pages back"

"Forget the appalling situation for workers at Westlands [back on page 11]" said another reader, "this Somerton story is disgusting"

The newspaper, which didn't have the space to report yesterday's Turn Hill Ward by election which could completely swing control of South Somerset District Council, said it was "delighted" readers found the pub gate headline so enthralling.

"We're already working on next week's front page story" said a spokeswoman:
