At last - polling day!

Huish residents expected to 'turn out in thousands'

Weeks of political campaigning have finally come to an end in Huish Episcopi as voters in the village go to the polls today to choose two new parish councillors.

There are 5 candidates:

Robert Crumb (Newtown)
Avril Montcrieff (Wagg Drove)
Keith Peto (Ducks Hill)
Richard Sparks (Wagg Drove)
Richard Stranger (Newtown)

They've all been campaigning on a number of local issues including the height of hanging baskets outside the Rose & Crown, how many doves should be allowed to roost up St Mary's Church tower at night and if parish leader Dame Shirley Nicholas should get her monthly crate of gin on council expenses or pay for it like the Vicar has to.

Dame Shirley, pictured above enjoying her favourite tipple with her deputy Graham Lock at a village cricket match last weekend, said she hoped voters would "do what's right" today.

The polling station, at the Leisure Centre/Academy, is open until 10pm.

In other news, there's 'another' election somewhere today but we're not sure what that one's about...details are still coming in.
