Muchelney Abbey Evacuated

...as weed on River Parrett gets out of control...

This was the terrifying scene at Muchelney Abbey yesterday as a clump of weed on the nearby river crawled up the bank and attacked the medieval building.

Nobody was hurt but survivors are already pointing the finger at the Environment Agency for failing to keep the huge quantities of 'summer weed' in the waterway under control.

By lunchtime, there'd been another incident...

This Bridgwater woman, who'd swum to Cocklemoor to get her scratchcards from One Stop, was pulled from the river by passers-by as she 'went down like the Titanic'

"I've never had duck weed up there before" she told reporters.

HM Coastguard, based at Stuckey's Island, admitted the river - pictured - had got "rather tricky" in recent weeks and warned people to take extra care...especially Martock Young Farmers coming over for their annual bath.

If you have any summer river pictures you'd like to share - send them in via this blog's Facebook page or E-mail them in.
