The supporting beam's rotted out...
There's been bad news today for the clock repair team in Langport.
Here's an e-mail from our town clerk David Mears which went out this afternoon:
😊
Dear all,
We
have hit a problem with the clock restoration. Our contractor has
removed the lead covering the beam that supports/suspends the clock
casing and has discovered it is severely rotted, as can be seen in the
attached pictures. We have had a structural engineer take a look and he
has deemed it unsafe.
The
clock casing will be removed by using a crane on Monday 3 September at
9.30am. Then planning will take place on a new clock casing support
beam.
The scaffolding and lights will be removed on Tuesday 4 September.
This
a major problem and with huge cost implications and we are very sorry
for a inconvenience caused with this recent development.
Kind regards
David
😊
That's all we've got for this evening.
Anyone work at a timber yard? Sounds like we need a beam (oak?) which will last another 150 years.
