Somerset schools stay open...

 ...despite one centimetre of snow.

There was widespread disbelief across Somerset today when virtually all primary and secondary schools across the county remained open despite the 'appalling' weather.

Heavy snowfall overnight - about a centimetre - lead most of us to expect the usual closures all round as well as paralysis on the roads and cancelled bus services.

But no - and Langport Tesco has just been in touch to say there's not even been any panic buying.

"Except for any of our bread not expiring by tomorrow" said a spokeswoman, "but that's normal"

Commenting on the lack of school closures today, an education spokeswoman at Somerset County Council suggested that it was "just a blip".

She said she expected local schools to "soon come to their senses in these treacherous conditions, do what's right, panic and close down the entire county"

There are no further details.
