Chaos in Langport....

As crane winches new clock into place, car breaks down under town hall - you couldn't write it!

Talk about stealing the new town clock's thunder...just as it was being winched up onto the scaffolding above the town hall this afternoon, a car's onboard computer pissed on its chips.

A BMW [Series 5] put the vehicle's handbreak on directly under the clock, outside the town hall, meaning traffic waiting for the lights in both directions could barely get by - it broke down right in the middle of them:

Despite angry shouts from passing motorists of "push it out of the f*$@ing way" the car could not be moved, yes folks, progress = you can't move a car when it breaks down anymore. Not if it has a computer in charge anyway.

If you thought this was the end of the pantomime - there was more. A well-meaning mechanic from Shires garage generously offered to come down and help....but got stuck in traffic.

North Street this afternoon - for 2 hours.

 - as people stuck in queues halfway back to Somerton and into Curry Rivel texted friends and family to ask what was going on - HGVs and other large vehicles attempted to squeeze by...

A number of them hit the scaffolding, causing workers up there trying to secure the new clock to crap their pants as the entire structure shook from side to side.

You couldn't write this...only in Langport folks.

"At least the new clock looks nice" said an Eastover pensioner...as she drove her Morris Minor up Frog Lane, down the drove, across Black Bridge and down to Huish Episcopi to get around the chaos.

The family from Reading whose car broke down told Carry On Langport that they were "sorry for any inconvenience" and asked whether much happened around here.

It was hard to give them a straight answer...so instead we gave them the blog's web address which is...as ever:
