MOUSE RACING ANYONE?

Crowds turned out for the highlight of the early spring sporting calendar last night as the finals of the South Somerset Mouse Racing League took place.

As in all these events, before each race individual runners were auctioned off giving the owners the chance to win cash prizes if their animal came first.

Then the punters placed their bets.

Bere Cider Farm near Aller hosted the event. Several races took place and with the mice not always keen on getting to the finish line, some of the heats were long drawn-out affairs:

Others were over before you knew it...

The organisers have hailed the event, held in aid of the Ukraine Appeal Fund, a huge success.

But the evening wasn't without its problems.

Just before the 3rd race, an Othery man was caught exchanging the mouse in lane 5 for a rat and moments before the final race an Aller woman was seen attempting to push a cat in behind the mouse in lane 2.

Both were asked to leave and have been banned from future competitions including the South West Snail Racing Finals on Westonzoyland airstrip next month.

There are no further details.
