The first 15 days!
Each day on Carry On Langport's Facebook page so far this December we've been looking back over some of the year's posts and or paying tribute to certain venues or events in the form of advent windows.
For those of you not on Facebook, here - on Carry On Langport's main web page - is what's gone out so far:
******
Carry On Langport's first advent window of 2022 is Eli's! Brillant to have the old place back with the new generation at the helm!
******
Opening our 2nd advent window of the season and we fondly remember what was Huish and Langport's last red telephone box. Part of great British street furniture next to the old railway bridge since at least the 1950s. Other nearby towns and villages renovate theirs at little or even no cost and keep them where they've been for decades, sadly Langport Town Council removed our last one this year and did not replace it.
******
On day 3 of advent, Carry On Langport remembered the week back in the spring when a local takeaway invited local Mums to pop in for some scratchy underwear:
******
On the 4th day of advent, we remembered PitFest which we understand will not be taking place in 2023. There are rumours the folk who organise Somerstock have asked if they can take over the venue. Harris fencing, out-of-town security on the gate and around 30 quid to get in? No thanks. Think we'd rather not have it at all than that nonsense.
******
With the Hanging Chapel closed and two months of road works between Garden City and the Kelways roundabout, our next Carry On Langport advent window commemorates the long hot summer of 2022 which many of us spent sitting in queues at traffic lights. Indeed the story even made the national news:
******
Carry On Langport's next advent window celebrated the town's newest arrival down on Cocklemoor. Shown here with his grandfather [bottom right] he's still denying rumours he's been sent to eggsterminate omelette and quiche prices at a nearby cafe.
******
Our next Carry On Langport advent window celebrated the charity fundraising efforts made by our young farmers throughout the year, including the day over the summer they all raided the landlady's wardrobe at the Halfway House
******
SQUAWK SQUAWK! The next Carry On Langport advent window celebrates our little friend 'the Langport Parakeet', still going strong and spotted this month up in the trees behind North Street
******
Fusing rooms 3, 6 and 12 in the hotel and causing a power surge at Podimore Roundabout traffic lights - our next advent calendar celebrated the dodgy [plugged in to the mains] Christmas display on the bar at the Langport Arms!
******
Our next window went off-piste slightly with a non-Langport theme. The 10th tied in sadly with the news of the death of actress Ruth Madoc. Her antics in hit 80s sitcom Hi-de-Hi! certainly resembled a Carry On. Off to the big holiday camp in the sky, thanks for the laughs Ruth!
We also showed a short video demonstrating some of her character Gladys Pugh's skills on the tannoy system at the 1950s holiday camp:
Alas, the next advent window was dedicated to the England Squad who lost against the French last weekend in the world cup quarter final.
Let's also show the footage recorded inside the Black Swan on the night of the match which demonstrated how, even when playing the French in a world cup quarter final, England fans still manage to find the time for the customary dig at the Germans:
The 12th Carry On Langport advent window celebrates the bridge that connects us to the rest of the world and the river that flows underneath. Here it is frozen over in 1940
******
The next advent window marks the demise of Langport's very own Flipper. Virtually completely rotted out with barely any paint left on him, the carving of the Dolphin outside the old pub and hotel of the same name appears to have finally gone off to meet its maker this year. May he flip (and flap) in peace
******
On the 14th day of advent, we sympathized with the various individuals who throughout the year sit at this bench in Langport Town Garden but just can't make the gruelling trek to the nearby litter bin and so leave their crap all over it instead:
******
and that takes us to where we've got so far, the 15th day of advent which celebrates our late Queen and remembers the street parties across parts of Langport and Huish over the summer for her jubilee, building some great childhood memories for the kids!
That's it for now. Stay warm and [here comes the Christmas sermon] if you've got a minute, maybe go and check up on elderly neighbours living nearby here in Langport and Huish. Many of them not heating their homes properly due to the extortionate cost of gas and electricity.
It's not a media myth, it's real. Happening right here where we live.
Go see how they're doing [here endeth the lesson] 👍👍👍
