A Tale Of Three Towers:

(or spires even - you decide)

DING DONG - HERE'S YOUR SUNDAY BULLETIN!

Clock towers, spires, bell towers - whatever you want to call them - all appear to be in the news at the moment.

Let's do the one at All Saints Hall (on the left) first.

The spire on the building on  North Street has been taken down and replaced with an evidently smaller one.

No problem with that, needs must etc, but the big question is of course, now the spire's been made safe and strong again - will we be getting the large gold-plated weather vane back that mysteriously 'went missing' over 10 years ago?

A beautiful piece of local architecture that seems to have been forgotten. Where is it? In someone's garage or shed? Or did that church warden who went to live in the Bahamas have it?

We need a local Miss Marple or Sherlock Holmes to get to the bottom of this one, it would be nice to have it back up there where it stood for decades, in its rightful place.

Now to the school!

Local woman and member of staff there Linette Pengelly has launched a fundraiser to save the primary school's bell tower which is in urgent need of repair.

If it isn't sorted, it'll have to come off completely.

It comes as the school's about to celebrate its 150th birthday, look closely and you can see the year 1876 in the stonework above one of the windows.

Here's an idea for you Mrs P....

We hear you've got contacts in the local music industry. How about a big 150th birthday concert in the playground? Turn it in to a school fundraiser too? Know any local bands?

All us former pupils could go and finish off with a giant game of marbles, get young Billy Langford to organise a conker match, play British Bulldog on the grass (if there's any left) then we could drag Mr Prewett out of retirement, get him to blow his whistle and all line up for assembly.

😁

Just a thought.

Either way, if you want to donate to the school bell tower fund, click HERE to find out how.

Finally to the town hall...

The hands on the town clock have been seized up for almost a year, now the bell appears to have followed suit and it too has stopped chiming.

Looks like the library clock isn't working either and the one at the convent looks pretty knackered as well.

We don't have much luck with public clocks around here do we?

The long delay in dealing with the town clock is evidently about money.

Although it begs the question, wasn't the very expensive refurbisment work a few years ago guaranteed?

Didn't last long did it.

Money in Langport has always been a problem. A tiny town and population with a lot of public facilities to pay for.

If only the town could merge its finances with another very wealthy nearby village filled with houses and council tax payers. Hmmmmm. Any ideas?

😄

That's your Sunday bulletin folks, thanks for the contributions and carry on reading!
