AIR DAY

Pilots from the UK and overseas take to the skies over Somerset.

RNAS Yeovilton holds its yearly Air Day today as thousands flock to the military base to see aircraft, old and new, from across the UK and the globe. The annual favourites are usually the magnificent red arrows and there are sometimes 'guest' appearances by old war horses such as The Vulcan and harrier 'jump' jets.

Not everyone has to go to the base itself to see the show as several of the planes can often be seen above the surrounding towns and villages performing their manouvres.
"Last year we saw the Italian Air Force reversing over Long Sutton" said a Huish Episcopi woman, while a Langport man said he hoped the Americans might use the excuse of 'friendly fire' to accidentally blanket bomb parts of Yeovil.

Ryanair said it too would be performing a few stunts in the Somerset skies this afternoon but warned that each loop-the-loop would cost on-lookers another fifteen pounds and if the pilot waved from the cockpit window then that would be an extra twenty.

We understand the Greek Air Force also planned to send a plane over for today, but they had to cancel when the Germans said they'd only lend them enough money to buy fuel to get to Cyprus.
