Stand-off at Eli's

Steam Engine turns up on 'bike night'

News has come in of a tense stand-off at The Rose and Crown on Wednesday when a Yeovil man drove his steam engine into the Eli's carpark on an evening traditionally reserved for motorcycles and their fans. Several drinkers in the beer garden - mainly teachers from Huish Academy - said there were angry exchanges between the steam engine crew and the bikers. Tempers flared further when a Hell's Angel from Drayton used the vintage vehicle's boiler to keep a double cheeseburger warm.
The situation was only resolved when the vicar of Huish turned up for her midweek pint of Burrow Hill and explained to the steam engine driver that this Saturday (tomorrow afternoon) is the day the steamers all turn up at Eli's.
With that - the engine driver, who by then had already had 9 pints of cider, agreed to leave and set off on his journey back to the Steam Fair site at High Ham...completely flattening a hippy commune at Wagg Drove on the way.

The only survivor of the Wagg Drove steam engine incident was this man, award-winning musician and song-writer Dave Hatfield.
