Fun Dog Show

Tails wagging at Heaven's Gate...

Heaven's Gate, the animal welfare trust at the back of High Ham near Langport, opens its doors today for its annual Fun Dog Show.

Taking place in a beautiful setting on the edge of a stretch of the Somerset Levels, there's something for everyone. Members of the public are urged to bring their own dogs along to take part in fun events in the arena and extra parking's been laid on for coaches expected to roll in from the Sydenham Estate in Bridgwater.

The event nearly had to be cancelled though when this incident - above - took place at the premises earlier this week. The dog (on the left) allegedly 'turned on' a member of staff when a dog-friendly couple living in a cottage with a massive garden nowhere near a main road were told they couldn't take her home because they "didn't meet the criteria for adopting an animal".

"I thought these animal sanctuaries were often overcrowded and struggling for money" said a puzzled Edith Jenkins from her home at Meadow Cottage, Middle of Nowhere Road, Paradise..."but unfortunately my husband twisted his ankle while jumping through hoops during our application and so we were rejected."

Anyone confused about Heaven's Gate's rehoming policy should check the 'five easy steps' on its website (click on the link below) or ask a member of staff at the dog show later today.

Today's event kicks off at 11am and ends at 4pm.
