End of an era...

...as NatWest announces plans to close its Langport branch

In the last 24 hours we've all been hearing the news that NatWest is to close in Langport along with over 150 other branches across the UK.

The bank's blaming us, saying customer numbers at Langport are down 21% due to the popularity of its online banking services. That's despite the fact that some Monday mornings the queue is almost out the door.

A 21% drop hardly warrants a branch closure does it? What are businesses supposed to do with the takings at the end of the day?

Langport's last bank will close in October leaving the town without a bank for the first time in what must be a couple hundred years.

The man who founded Langport's first ever bank, George Stuckey (pictured), was heard spinning in his grave up at All Saints Churchyard last night.

The current NatWest is in the same building the Stuckeys used.

So there ya go, housing estates popping up all over Langport and Huish and NatWest says it's time to close down the town's only bank.

Oh well, what do you expect from a bunch of bankers.

Does this mean our bank charges will go down? No branch = less costs, right?
