LANGPORT IN THE EIGHTIES

Come take a look...

There's an exhibition of photographs of Langport in the 1980s next week.

It's at the library and has been organised by the Langport and District History Society.

Why not go down and take a look?

Langport was indeed a different place back then.

Pub crawls began at the bottom of town at The Dolphin and took in the Old Custom House before heading to the Royal British Legion bar (if you were a member) and then the Arms before staggering into North Street for the Swan and the White Lion.

Many of us got our groceries at VG and if your racer's or chopper's brakes weren't working, you pushed it down to Frank's Autoneeds opposite the primary school...hoping to catch a glimpse of the 'cultural' calendar on the wall in John Light's mechanic's shed at the back.

The iron swing bridge outside the Railway Hotel still worked before someone overwound it...

 - and All Saint's Hall had a glorious gold-plated weather vane on its spire, before it was taken down 'for repairs' and has never been seen since.

Mobile phones were nowhere to be seen, most people had a landline and many of us still used phone boxes - where you could make a quick call for just 2p!

Langport's kiosks were at the railway bridge near The Avenue (still there today but in a sorry state), another was tucked away behind a little brick wall at the entrance to the Post Office yard and a third down in the lay-by opposite The Dolphin.

In Huish there was one along the pavement between Portland Road and Wagg Drove.

Best of all was the deathtrap location of the Doctors' Surgery: halfway up Langport Hill! People only mildly ill when they set out were seriously ill by the time they staggered up there on the slippery pavements and poured their hearts out to the Nightgingales.

What a carry on.

Having trouble tuning into Tomorrow's World on Thursday nights (just before Top of the Pops) or the needle keeps getting stuck on your record player? A quick visit to Mr Head's shop (where the Brainwave charity is today) usually sorted it - nice one Cyril!

The photographic exhibition at the library begins at 7.30pm and costs £4.
