Langport Easter Egg Hunt Cancelled

 Local whistleblower blamed

Tomorrow morning's annual Easter Egg Hunt on Cocklemoor has had to be cancelled after Town Council Leader Val Saunders told local children where all the eggs are.

It's believed she's leaked a map of their positions to the local media.

"It's typical of that woman" snapped a former town councillor.

"As soon as we try to do something secretive she has to spill the beans" continued the woman, who asked not to be named...(I wouldn't dare)

The row's expected to dominate the next town council meeting and there are calls for a local referendum on the issue.

There are no further details.

Live band mix-up at Halfway House

Landlord 'fed-up' with telephone enquiries....

A Pitney pub has asked Carry On Langport to help sort out confusion over exactly who's playing at their premises this Saturday night.

Local lads 'Twisted Vinyl' are supposed to be performing at the Halfway House - and still are - but according to social media, it's Mendip Hills band 'Penny and the Potholers'....

...playing live in the pub's car park.

"No no no" said Mark Phillips, "they're on next weekend...but not until we get the old lady out of the one on the right"

- and if Twisted Vinyl aren't your cup of tea then check out the Rose and Crown at nearby Huish Episcopi where the lights are out this Saturday.

'Powercut' are playing in the top room.

There ya go - more news as it comes in.

It's the 4th Friday of the month folks!

Tensions rise between Japan and UK...

...as Hiroshima tries to get its old clock back.

Japan has again made an illegal attempt to hijack fundraising for Langport clock by making an under-the-counter bid to buy it outright.

"We've already told them they can't have it" said town council leader Val Saunders...from the set of Sandra Bullock's new film 'Miss Confidentiality'.

Despite the diplomatic row, British efforts to raise £7000 to get the clock down and repaired are well underway.

According to the website set up to engineer the fundraising (pictured), just over £2,160 has already been donated (as of Wednesday night)

If you'd like to donate online, click on the link below.

Or you can send a cheque payable to Langport Town Trust to the Town Hall on Bow Street, write the word 'clock' on the back of the cheque.

You can also make cash donations to Langport Information Centre or at the town hall itself, upstairs in the clerk's office.

- and last but not least don't forget this every Saturday this month:

That's it for this evening, more news as it comes in.

Look who's 90!

...was a very good year.

Indeed it was.

In US cinemas, Mickey Mouse made his first appearance, British scientist Frederick Griffith discovered DNA and the Flying Scotsman made its first journey between Edinburgh and London.

In Langport - with its two railway stations - business was booming. The town still didn't have any electricity, that didn't happen until the early 30s, but gaslight meant that it was still possible to find any one of Bow Street's several pubs at night and even see the dust on the plates on the wall at the Langport Arms.

- but something even more important happened back in 1928: little Joanie Field showed up in the world.

Known to us today as Garden City resident Joan Whybrow (is that how you spell it?) this lovely lady was a 'gran' or a 'supervisor' in the playground for anyone who went to the local primary school in the 1970s.

All us over 40s who you blew your whistle at in the playground salute you Joan - our own little bit of local royalty - 90 years young this week!

Happy birthday!

Dear Sir or Madam,

I was wondering if you were organising any sort of emergency appeal for pupils at Huish Academy?

Looking out of my window at the top of St Mary's Park, it's been most distressing to see youngsters shivering in the cold in the playground every day recently...standing in lines with the headmaster looking at them furiously.

Rather oddly, there's always a bell ringing when this happens. I've rung Huish vicarage but they say it's nothing to do with the church.

Either way, I have already collected 200 blankets and 8 pairs of Long Johns. Please tell me what to do with them.

Many thanks,

Name & address supplied.

Dear Sir,

My wife and I had the most extraordinary experience last Friday afternoon.
We strolled over to Cocklemoor after lunch, sat on one of the riverside benches and soon found ourselves nodding off in the spring sunshine.
We woke up minutes later to find ourselves surrounded by a full forensics team from Langport Surgery with Dr Balai giving the wife the kiss of life and Vera Botting giving me a foot massage.
I've said it before and I'll say it again...you really can't beat the NHS.
Many thanks.

Name & address supplied.

To whom it may concern:

Could I pass on my apologies to the management team at the Halfway House at Pitney.

For one reason or another, my husband and I had to leave mother's Morris Minor in a pot hole in the car park last Sunday. If you look carefully, you can just see the aerial poking out the water.

Lovely roast though!

Yours,

Name & address provided.

Editor,

I am writing to double-check an order you placed with our company two weeks ago.
Is it correct that you want 30 copies of 'Park in the town centre and walk up!' delivered to the Freemason's lodge at the Hanging Chapel at Langport?
If so, please let us know by Monday and we will process your order.
On another matter, we are sorry but we have no more copies of 'How to get an ambulance or fire engine to the top of The Hill by parachute' which you have also ordered for the same address.
Many thanks,

Waterstones, Taunton

Park bench spy attack...

 Kingsbury Episcopi latest...

Police investigating the collapse of 2 people on a park bench in Kingsbury Episcopi earlier this week have identified the nerve agent used in the attack.

"We believe it was a chemical called BHC2018" said PC Brace from his stool at the Wyndham Arms, "also known as Burrow Hill Cider...it's something often used by the Secret Service in Stembridge"

The pair are currently recovering at Yeovil District Hospital and yesterday at a meeting of Kingsbury Parish Council's emergency Cobra committee...it was decided to cut off diplomatic relations with Stembridge until the situation's resolved.

"I don't know what all the fuss is about" said Val 'confidentiality' Saunders at Langport Town Council, "we have scenes like that outside the One Stop most weekday afternoons."

We'll bring you more news as it comes in.

BBC Grandstand: Wrestling

 Match suspended at Langport Tesco...

Sports fans have been left disappointed today after management at Langport Tesco announced there'd been no more wrestling in the aisles until they get some more food in.

This (above) was the scene in the town's branch of the supermarket at around 7 o'clock this evening (Mon).

"There'll be another match as soon as we get another 2-litre semi-skimmed in" said one of the management team, from the red corner.

It follows an incident on Thursday evening when police were called after a brawl broke out over the milk.

This evening, several shelves remain empty.

"It's been awful...my boyfriend and I have been forced to eat organic tulips and muesli since Saturday" said a Wagg Drove woman.

"No change there then" commented Andrew Smith on the tannoy.

If you've been forced to make do on only 9 loaves of bread and 40 litres of milk this weekend, send your stories of woe in to Carry On Langport's Facebook page.

- and we hope the two gents fighting over the milk on Thursday have made up.

There are no further details.
