Roman remains uncovered at Somerton:

50 skeletons found on new school building site.

The remains of 50 adults and children from the Roman period have been unearthed during digging works for a new school at Somerton.

Believed to be an ancient cemetery, the skeletons are in well-preserved graves.

It's on land for the new school being built behind the fire station.

There's huge excitement among archaeologists across the UK about the find and the story's hit the national news.

A spokesman for the South West Heritage Trust said he believed the bones date back to the period 43-410 AD.

"They had pottery and jewellery placed around them which suggests the deceased had a high social standing" said Doctor Kenneth Williams, "some of them may have even died in battle, we're not sure."

"and despite the apparent wealth of the individuals" he added, "several of the dead had absolutely no money left on them....we think they'd possibly spent a few hours at the nearby White Hart the night before they died".

The discovery was made some time ago and isn't expected to delay building of the new school which should begin later this month.

There are no further details.
