Power surges at Langport

'Teething problems' as festive illuminations settle in.

Hinkley Point says the Langport area has been experiencing power surges since the town's Christmas lights were installed and switched on last Sunday morning.

"Nothing to be alarmed about" said a spokesman, "it happens every year"

One of the power surges hit the big screen at the surgery which started showing Carry On Screaming yesterday just as Dr Balai performed a vasectomy on another member of the Bown family.

Another struck at Boots the Chemist where ketamine was accidentally handed out to an Eastover couple...they were seen taking 3 hours to cross the road later outside Travis Perkins.

The Black Swan was also affected, "3 of our 900 halogen lights aren't working" said the landlord.

Nextdoor, the Hair and Beauty Lodge also reported problems when this woman emerged from one of the tanning booths just after lunch on Sunday.

She told reporters she was "delighted" with the results, "I'll take in stuffing and spuds next time" she said.

There may have also been an issue with the printing machinery which did the maps for the Langport Christmas Fair:

Two of the town's oldest businesses the Black Swan and the Langport Arms have been completely left out.

We believe there was also a power surge at Langport Town Council leader Val Saunders' address in Huish on Monday but she told neighbours it hadn't gone to her head.

There are no further details.

THIS SATURDAY!

FIREWORKS AT 6.30PM!

Editor's Note - As you can see we have done a bit of D.I.Y and added two popular town businesses to the map. For some reason the Langport Arms and the Black Swan were not included in the original design.

Both venues will have their doors open to the crowds on Saturday and will in fact be two of the few businesses still open once the fireworks are over.

It's all bollards

Hanging Chapel Consultation - have your say!

In case you're not up to speed, Langport Town and Somerset County Councils have launched a joint consultation into whether bollards should be placed across the Hanging Chapel, effectively making the route a no through road.

It's in response to an increasing number of incidents where HGVs have hit the underside of the medieval building causing an amount of damage.

To have your say, click on the link below which will take you to a simple web page where you enter your details and an opinion.

Rather annoyingly, the consultation limits you to just three choices before leaving your comments.

Before typing in the comments box, you have to either click on an option that you 'support the installation of the bollards', that you 'feel no change should be made' or that you 'do not have an opinion'.

Surely there's a fourth option? - that yes action needs to be taken, but not closing the road!

In other words, yes sort the problem out....but re-routing the area's traffic can't be the only answer can it?

Do we really want rush hour commuters filtered past both local schools in the morning? Sealing off the Chapel would mean everything has to go past the primary on North Street and the Academy at Huish.

All because a few HGV drivers use dodgy SatNavs instead of looking at local signage and using common sense?

There's got to be a less drastic answer. Many of you have suggested more signs.

Yep...maybe.

BUT...

House prices

But we mustn't forget those of you who wholeheartedly support the no through road plan.

Yes folks, one-way traffic leading up to both sides of a closed-off Hanging Chapel would not only prevent further HGV hits but increase the value of your home.

In fact, it's rumoured one homeowner along there has been contacting all his neighbours encouraging them to actively support the closure. Someone even told us he's printing out fliers to post through people's doors.

That's one way of getting your views across! (you should try blogging mate)

So stop reading this, go to the Langport.live website by clicking HERE  and enter your views. The more people who comment on this one the better -

- and you've only got until December 4th when the consultation closes.

I wonder what old Miss Lock who used to live in the little house next to the Chapel would think of it all? If only she was still about, none of this would be necessary.

Although hang on....weren't there times when she used to wave vehicles through whatever was coming?

Maybe we should leave her to rest in peace.

In other news -

Thanks to the volunteers who put up Langport's Christmas lights on Sunday. Almost 20 people turned out to help. There are a few gaps and a few places where they're not working....but town clerk David Mears says he's "on to it".

The wicker/withy deer are expected to appear shortly as well as lights in the trees in the precinct.

All ready for the Langport Christmas Fayre and fireworks (and Malcolm & Richard's leaving do!) this Saturday.

Good stuff...who'd wanna live anywhere else eh?

Thanks to those who have contributed to the blog recently - keep it coming.

Black Friday mayhem at Langport

 Chaos in Bow Street

Bow Street came to a standstill yesterday as Black Friday shoppers dashed to downtown Langport to sweep up the bargains.

At one point so many Chatham Place residents were buying cut-price scratch cards, One Stop had to turn its automatic doors off - 3 people were injured.

- and the Cocklemoor store says it even sold a ball of wool.

Local pubs were also affected:

Tune in again tonight for more American bollocks when we reveal details of how Langport and Huish residents are spending their Thanksgiving weekend and news of how LangFest 2018 will be held on the 4th of July.

If you want something British however, get over to Glastonbury today for the Frost Fayre

Awesome event in the High Street, 10am - 7pm

- and if you hear an American accent in the crowd....ask them if they're Canadian - that usually does it.

Unless of course it's one of Langport's new politicians.

Happy Thanksgiving Monica and congratulations!

The Magnificent Seven

Langporters vote in their new councillors

For those of you who haven't seen them, here are the results of Thursday's by election. Nine people stood for seven seats, so two candidates have been disappointed.

So here they are folks the Magnificent Seven, including the number of votes they got:

Stephen Glas - 142
Alan Donald - 131
Stephen Jenkinson - 122
Monica Denny - 118
Martin Sandford - 89
Stephen Tilley - 89
Bernie Graham - 87

Congratulations councillors and commiserations to Robert Searle and Derek Yeomans who didn't poll enough votes to get elected.

Celebrations have been underway all day. We believe councillors Donald, Jenkinson & Glas - pictured above out canvassing last week - have consumed so much Port, they've forgotten there's even been an election and can't read the town clock.

Don't worry lads, none of us can.

Date for your diary

If you want to see what they all look like and hear what they've got to say, the first formal town council meeting with all 11 councillors will be held on the evening of December 19th.

That's it for now, more news as it comes in.

Bat Signal switched on over Langport

As townsfolk gear up for council election

The Bat Signal was shining out from the roof of Langport Town Hall last night.

The light is only switched on in cases of town emergencies or around events of great importance, like today (Thurs): a town election to replace the 7 councillors who resigned during the summer in the 'Chapelgate' row.

The polling station is open until 10pm at the Ridgway Hall, 9 candidates are standing to fill the 7 vacancies.

Only Langport-registered electors can vote. Yep, sorry Huishers, you're out. Until you start contributing something to Langport's council tax money pot you don't have a say - unless you want to merge with the town.

Oh dear.

Back to the election, so on your voting slip today you can only choose a maximum of 7 names. A lesser number is also acceptable - so for example if you think only two candidates on the list are any good - then you just vote for those two.

Results should be in tomorrow.

Let's see what we get.

Mugabe Resigns

"I've bought myself a little hotel in Langport" says African dictator

After 37 years in power, Zimbabwe's President Robert Mugabe stepped down this afternoon (Tues) amid his own parliament's attempts to remove him after a military coup just 7 days ago.

The 93 year-old was seen at Bristol Airport just hours ago where he told reporters he'd bought himself "a little hotel on the Somerset Levels" as a retirement present.

It's believed he could be referring to the Langport Arms, which according to press reports last week has been sold off to "an international consortium"

Langport Town Council is refusing to confirm allegations it's given Mr Mugabe diplomatic immunity provided he doesn't take any plates off the wall in the downstairs bar.

But it's believed he has been granted permission to torture and machine-gun anyone who criticises the carvery.

There are also fears the former dictator is already trying to swing the results of this week's town council election at Langport, amid rumours he tried to have councillor Ian Macnab buried alive at Whatley on Tuesday.

- but Mr Macnab told Carry On Langport it was just a "misunderstanding" over how many AK 47s he could help Mr Mugabe get down the River Parrett in his passenger ferry by the end of the month.

"He'll need all the weapons he can get if he wants to get rid of Saunders and her cronies" said a former town councillor from her home near the Hanging Chapel.

"Wish he'd come up 'ere and sort out our town council" said a Somerton man, "...we could do with a few landmines around the Sports Club"

Mr Mugabe told Carry On Langport he was "delighted" that he was in such demand in the area and looked forward to "making a few changes"

There are no further details.

From Malcolm & Richard

Langport Arms management publish 'farewell' on Facebook

This appeared on Facebook yesterday. Sad news, end of an era but the beginning of a new one....and there's gonna be one hell of a leaving party!

Good Evening Langport and the Rest of Somerset and beyond !

Myself and Malcolm are sure that at some point over the past you have heard one rumor or another regarding the mysteries of whether or not the hotel is for sale and has it been sold or not !
Well tonight we are able to finally set the record straight.

After almost 25 years for myself and 30 for Malcolm we will finally be saying farewell to the Langport Arms Hotel.

From the 8th December 2017 the Hotel will be Managed By Debbie Hermer who has worked with us for over seven years.

Debbie has a wealth of knowledge who having worked for several large corporate hospitality companies as a manager and area manager.

Debbie will continue to employ the same familiar faces here at the "Arms" that you are all used to.
The Hotel has been purchased by an investment company who will have no direct involvement with the running of the hotel, and wish to keep the hotel the same as we have done so with Debbie's involvement as manageress.

You will still see us around as we are still sure to visit Langport as we have so many friends that we have made over past 30 years.

We would like to thank everyone of you for your support over the years, whether it was just a regular pint, to a weekly Carvery, or a Family Function or Wedding Reception each and everyone as important, and thank you again.

You know we have always enjoyed a good Party at the "Arms" and it just wouldn't be right to leave without one final knees up!

So we would like to invite each and everyone of you to celebrate our time here on Saturday 2nd December 2017 8.00 pm til late!

We would love to see friends and customers old and new, and each and everyone of you who has worked with us from pot wash, Housekeepers, Bar people Waiting and Kitchen Staff.

We have loved each and every minute of our time here, but its time for us to move on and let someone else have a go!

Love to you all and Godbless xxx

Oh that pesky chapel!

Here we go again...

There were discussions about doing it in the 70s and it came to nothing. Then, in the early 80s, talks took place about putting a traffic light there but nothing happened.

Now, that pesky Hanging Chapel is in the news again and it's nothing to do with being sold off, a leaking roof or the Freemasons.

This has appeared on the Langport.life website in recent days: serious consideration may be given to sealing off the Chapel to traffic and make Langport Hill a no through road.

Why? Because the traffic is getting too thick and fast? Because people park right at the top of the hill on both sides making it difficult for drivers to see what's coming up/down? Because everyone up there has 2/3 cars parked outside their homes? Or because the Langport and Huish gentry just want a quieter life?

- and won't making the hill a no through road mean traffic is diverted past both the Academy and the Primary School from both sides? - and clog up the ever-busy Kelways roundabout?

Musical Interlude:

Is the idea the only option or are there others? Who's come up with it? Our town council? (Aren't there only 4 of them at the moment?)

Click on the link below where you can read all about it and send in your feedback to the Highways Agency/Town Council.

Carry On Langport's mailbag is open for business, whether you're for or against - get your messages in via the Facebook page and we'll put them out soon in 'Letters to the Editor'.

Remember folks: nothing's been decided but please do get involved in the official consultation process. Go to the Langport.life website so that you can get your views logged.

There are no further details.

Tiaras and tutus anyone?

Forget climate change, homelessness and Brexit...this is heavy:

Parents across the Langport area and surrounding villages with youngsters in Church of England schools are breathing a sigh of relief this week as official guidance from the Archbishop of Canterbury says their boys can dress up in tiaras and tutus.

"Thank goodness for that!" said one head mistress, "We've had the school fancy dress box locked up in the basement for years, now we can start using it again without fear of arrest"

"We had to do Cinderella in the dark last Christmas in case anybody disapproved of three of our boys dressed up as the ugly sisters" said another.

"Great to see the Church is focussing on the important stuff" said one head, as another holy war kicked off in the Middle East.

Tune in for more of the same next week when the Politically Correct Brigade orders nurseries across the UK to install litter trays in playgrounds for any 4 year-olds who think they're cats and bans Black Forest Gateau at the Langport Arms because it's racist.

News just in...

  - and in the last few minutes we've heard that the Langport Arms has lost its High Court case against the Euthanasia Society. The organisation had sued the award-winning hotel after management took Death by Chocolate off the menu earlier this year.

Ho ho ho
